Expert Italian Tutor-Serious Italian Learning
Meet your Italian tutor
I’m Emanuele Piva — an Italian tutor and PLIDA examiner based in the UK. I grew up in Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet and one of Italy’s great literary hearts. It’s where I fell in love with the Italian language, studied it, and eventually taught it at university level.
But teaching, for me, was never just about grammar rules and vocabulary lists. I wanted to understand how people actually learn a language. That curiosity took me to New York, where I immersed myself in linguistic neuroscience and began building a teaching method rooted in how the brain truly acquires language.
From there, Switzerland — where I worked with the Italian Consulate, became an official PLIDA examiner, and refined my approach with students from across Europe and beyond.
Today I work as a private Italian tutor — running Piva Italian School and designing a dedicated study plan for every single student. I prepare all materials myself. No textbooks, no shortcuts. Just teaching that’s built around you.
When I’m not teaching, I write. Because Italian, for me, has never just been a subject. It’s a life.
The Story Behind the School
Some things are born in motion. Piva School was born in stillness.
For nearly two decades, the classroom was my home. Since 2007, I have taught Italian in schools, university auditoriums, and lecture halls — in the most human and traditional way the Italian system knows. Face to face, breath to breath, lesson by lesson. Thousands of hours. Countless students. A career shaped by the deep belief that language, at its finest, is something that is lived and felt together in a room.
Then the pandemic arrived. And everything stopped.
For the first time in almost twenty years, I had silence. And in that silence, something unexpected: the gift of time. Time to step back from the relentless rhythm of teaching and ask the questions that urgency had never allowed. Not just how to move lessons online — but how to build something genuinely better. How to take everything I had learned across two decades of classrooms and weave it together with the discoveries of modern neuroscience into a method the digital world had never yet seen.
The question became an obsession. When does language truly take root in the mind? How does the brain hold onto new words, new sounds, new structures — and why do traditional methods so often let them slip away? The answers, drawn from both my lived experience and neuroscientific research, pointed in one clear direction: learning must follow the brain’s natural rhythm. Spaced, meaningful, emotionally engaged — timed not by a syllabus, but by the mind itself.
That insight became a method. That method became a school.
Piva School was built on twenty years of teaching, one pandemic, and one powerful question. The result is an approach to Italian that is personalised, scientifically grounded, and designed to make the language feel not like something you study — but something you simply begin to remember.

With full dedication to take you exactly where you need to get — and equal care to make sure that every step of the journey is one you truly enjoy.
Why Piva School Exists?
The purpose of Piva School is simple: to teach Italian, and in doing so, to change lives. Not in a dramatic, overnight way — but in the quiet, cumulative way that learning a language truly does. The way a new word suddenly makes a song make sense. The way a conversation in a foreign tongue makes you feel, for a moment, like a larger version of yourself. The way a language, once learned, becomes a lens through which the world looks different — richer, wider, more alive.
That is why Piva School exists. Not just to teach a language — but to open a door, and walk through it with you.
